What is an MOT and do I need an one?
If your vehicle is three years or older then you are required by law to have an annual MOT Test . The purpose pf the MOT test is to ensure that vehicles meet the minimum safety levels set out by UK road traffic law.
What happens on an MOT?
During the MOT test the nominated tester (a person authorised, by the UK government body who regulates MOT VOSA -Vehicle and Operator Services Agency-) this person will conduct an inspection based on a comprehensive series of checks around the vehicle to include: Interior, Exterior, Engine compartment, and the underside of the vehicle.
The result of each check is recorded and if the vehicle passes the MOT, then a VT40 or "Pass Certificate" is issued.
However if the vehicle fails to meet the required standard then a VT30 "Failure Document" is issued, which explains which checks the vehicle has failed on the test and you will be required to make the repairs to the vehicle before you can allow the vehicle to re-sit the MOT test. We will be happy to provide you with a quotation to undertake this work, whilst the vehicle is within the garage to help you get on the road again.
The vehicle may pass the MOT test, but have "Advisory Items". These are point that don't fail the test, but are worthy of mention to you, so you can keep an eye on them, as they may need repaired / replaced in the near future.
Who will notify me, when I need an MOT?
Unlike Road Tax you will not recieve an notification when your MOT is about to expire, it is your responsibilty to ensure your vehicle is examined every 12 months, as without a current MOT certificate you will be unable to driv your vehicle lawfully or renew your Road Fund Licence.
VOSA now publish the MOT database to police and road traffic camera safety systems, which scan your registeration number and run it against the MOT database to see if your vehicle has a current certificate listed.
The penaulty for not having a valid MOT certificate could be a fine or cesure of the vehicle. Also if the vehicle is involved in an accident you may be asked to produce your MOT certificate, which could affected any insurance claim by the absense of an MOT certificate.
